|FOLK ARTS FESTIVAL "AUGŠDAUGAVA 2011"|
weekend on 28th and 29th of May the International Folk Arts Festival
“Augšdaugava 2011” is organized by Daugavpils County Council. The aim of
event is to promote the outstanding nature, traditions and cultural
heritage of Daugavpils County, tourism and crafts development, creative
activity of county population, as well as to strengthen cross-border
from the following municipalities will take part in the festival:
Zarasai and Rokiškis districts (Lithuania), Braslav district (Belarus),

fair, concerts of international partners and Daugavpils groups, dances
and games, sunflower garden planting, exhibitions, sports activities,
horse riding and entertainment for children.
EU DELEGATION TO BELARUS ANNOUNCES CONTEST
the occasion of Europe Day, the European Union Delegation to Belarus
announces its annual contest for journalists who cover relations and
cooperation between the EU and Belarus.
Delegation seeks to support and promote reporting that is
well-researched, based on critical thinking, forward-looking, socially
responsible, and made in the spirit of good citizenship.
Delegation invites journalists from Belarusian print, broadcasting, and
online media, as well as bloggers ("citizen journalists"), to submit
news reporting, commentary, editorials, investigations, feature stories,
etc. published between 1 January 2011 and 15 October 2011 that convey
information and analysis on EU-Belarus relations, assistance, and

LITHUANIA HOSTS 7TH BELARUSIAN-LITHUANIAN ECONOMIC FORUM
7th Belarusian-Lithuanian Economic Forum started in the town of
Druskininkai on 12 May. It is discussing the prospects of cooperation
in investment, transit, energy, engineering, bio-energy, logistics etc.

THIS SUMMER NEW PASSENGER TRAIN STARTS: RIGA-MINSK
the 1st of June 2011 Latvian Railways in cooperation with Belarusian
Railways launches new passenger train between Riga and Minsk.
train will stop at the following stations: Krustpils, Daugavpils,
Indra, Bigosovo, Verhnedvinsk, Polock, Krulevsczina, Molodeczno. Upon
arrival at the destination station in Minsk passengers will be able to
travel to the Black Sea resorts – Anapa, Adler, Odessa, - as well as to
various European cities: Berlin, Prague, Kiev and Warsaw.
train will depart from Minsk at 20:07 and arrive in Riga on the
following day at 08:00, while it will depart Riga at 19:00 and arrive in
Minsk on the following day at 07:30 offering passengers convenient
connections to further destinations. The train will operate every day
during the summer from June 1st to August 31st, and after summer period
from Riga and Minsk – on Saturdays and Sundays.

LITHUANIA AND BELARUS WANT TO ORGANISE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP TOGETHER
the 12th of May 2011, the Lithuanian Basketball Federation has
announced that Lithuania and Belarus have submitted an application to
the European Branch of the International Basketbal Federation („FIBA Europe“) to hold the European women basketball championship together in 2015.
FIRST LATVIAN-BELARUSIAN DICTIONARY PRESENTED
Latvian Ambassador to Belarus, Mr. Mikhail Popkov, presented the first
Latvian-Belarusian and Belarusian-Latvian dictionary during exhibition
“Mass Media in Belarus” in Minsk. Representatives of the Ministry of
Information of Belarus and the Academy of Sciences, leaders and
activists of Latvian-Belarusian Union, as well as other interested
persons participated in the event.
Ambassador emphasized in his speech that publishing of this dictionary
is not only significant event but at the same time the good example of
successful cooperation of different institutions and commercial
structures of both countries. This work was started by Dr. of Philology
Mirdza Ābola (1923 – 2007). Her handwriting processing, preparation and
completion of the book was done by Language and Literature Institute of
Belarusian Academy of Sciences. While the dictionary was published in
dictionary contains approximately 40 thousand words, which reflect the
traditional, socio-political, popular vocabulary with some technical
terminology of the contemporary Latvian and Belarusian literary
language. Dictionary belongs to so-called “author type” dictionary. It
differs from bilingually translated dictionaries by the authors’
specific approach, such as lexical selection. It will help everyone who
uses and who has not lost the interest in Latgalian language, as this
dictionary can be an excellent source of information to understand the
impact of the Belarusian language on Latgale dialects, as well as to
understand the meaning of some Latgalian words that have remained
outside official dictionaries.
