2011-07-26 LITHUANIAN MFA SUGGESTS ABOLISHING VISA FEES FOR BELARUSIANS

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania presented a proposal to the Government to abolish national visas fees for the Belarusian citizens. The draft decision suggests not to charge consular fees for processing applications on issuing national visas.

Previously the possibility of nominal visa fees was being discussed. Currently, a visa costs 60 € (207 litas).

The possibility of visa fee abolition appeared last month after the Parliament had introduced amendments to the Law on consular fees, which enable the Government to reduce or even eliminate visa fees not only as parity, but also if necessary to achieve external policy and national security objectives.

In this case, the possibility of fee abolition for long-term national visas, type D, is the point of discussion. This visa is granted if a person is willing to stay in the country more than 3 months during half-a-year period. It allows a limited stay in other Shengen states.

Poland and Latvia have abolished national visa fees for Belarus.

The Government shall take the final decision during the session.

2011-07-12 BELARUSIAN MINISTRY OF SPORTS SUBMITS PROPOSALS ON VISA FACILITATION

The Ministry of Sports and Tourism of Belarus has submitted to the Council of Ministers proposals on simplifying tourist visa requirements. Once approved by the government the proposals will be submitted to the head of state.

In particular, the Ministry of Sports and Tourism suggests reducing visa costs, abolishing express charges and cancelling consular fees altogether in the future.

In the beginning of April the Belarusian government has announced the plans on facilitation visa requirements for foreign citizens who enter the country for tourism. Visa facilitation is planned for the countries whose citizens are most frequent to Belarus for tourism.

The Ministry of Sport and Tourism forecasts that losses from abolition of consular fees will be offset by the increased purchase of goods and services by foreign tourists in the country as well as by creating new working places, which, in turn, will entail additional tax and budget revenue. Visa regime significantly reduces competitiveness of tourist products and serves an incentive for selection alternative travel destinations.
