2011-07-28 LATVIA OPENS ECONOMIC REPRESENTATIVE OFFICE IN BELARUS
Latvian Investment and Development Agency (LIDA) plans to open economic representative office in Belarus this fall. At the moment LIDA is looking for the head of future representative office. His main tasks will be to inform Belarusian companies about business opportunities in Latvia, business environment and development of industries, opportunities for cooperation and exports.Representation will also deal with investments attraction and promotion of bilateral economic relations.Applications will be accepted in LIDA Personnel department until August 15th.
2011-07-26 BRANCH OFFICE OF THE ENPI CBC PROGRAMME „POLAND-BELARUS-UKRAINE” OPENS IN BREST
Branch Office of the Joint Technical Secretariat of Poland-Belarus-Ukraine CBC ENPI Programme 2007-2013 opens in Brest on the 28th of July. The experts of the Branch Office will inform applicants about funding possibilities of the Programme, applicable documents, procedures and Programme activities including training seminars as well as support the Joint Technical Secretariat in the process of implementation of the information and visibility plan of the Programme on the territory of Belarus.
2011-07-26 LITHUANIAN MFA SUGGESTS ABOLISHING VISA FEES FOR BELARUSIANS
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania presented a proposal to the Government to abolish national visas fees for the Belarusian citizens. The draft decision suggests not to charge consular fees for processing applications on issuing national visas. Previously the possibility of nominal visa fees was being discussed. Currently, a visa costs 60 € (207 litas).The possibility of visa fee abolition appeared last month after the Parliament had introduced amendments to the Law on consular fees, which enable the Government to reduce or even eliminate visa fees not only as parity, but also if necessary to achieve external policy and national security objectives.In this case, the possibility of fee abolition for long-term national visas, type D, is the point of discussion. This visa is granted if a person is willing to stay in the country more than 3 months during half-a-year period. It allows a limited stay in other Shengen states.Poland and Latvia have abolished national visa fees for Belarus.The Government shall take the final decision during the session.
2011-07-25 BELARUS WILL LEARN LITHUANIAN EXPERIENCE OF LOGISTICS SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
Belarusian delegation plans to visit Lithuania in August to investigate the work of the logistics centers, study the experience of cooperation between the government and business, customs legislation and Fee Policy. The delegation will include representatives of the companies, investing in similar objects in Belarus. Belarus is still at the beginning of logistics system development, the corresponding program till 2015 has been adopted, 50 sites for the construction of logistic centers identified. Four logistics centers have already started operating.Lithuanian investors are interested in development of the logistics system in Belarus. Thus, the company "Vinges Terminalas" and JSC "Alvora" are the founders of JV "BelVingesLogistic" - a modern transport and logistics center which is being constructed in the village of Rakov, Volozhin district.
2011-07-21 LATVIA – LITHUANIA: "MISSION: TO CREATE"
From 15th to 25th of September the International Plein Air “Mark Rothko 2011” will take place in Daugavpils in the framework of ERDF financed Latvia – Lithuania CBC Programme’s project “Mission: to create” which is jointly implemented by Daugavpils City (Latvia) and Utena Museum (Lithuania).Mark Rothko, born Marcus Rothkowitz (September 25, 1903 – February 25, 1970), was a world famous Daugavpils-born painter. Two weeks creative workshop will gather in artist’s native town 15 young artists from 12 countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Poland, Estonia, Denmark, Ukraine, Great Britain, Austria, Romania, Armenia and Russia.Another large project is being currently implemented in Daugavpils Fortress – Development of Rothko Art Centre. The unique art works of plein air participants will form exposition of the Art Centre in the future.
2011-07-19 LITHUANIANS AND LATVIANS JOIN FORCES IN CHERRY WORSHIP
The seventh Žagarė cherry festival was held on the 14th-17th of July in Žagarė, Joniškis district, Lithuania. This is the traditional festival of Žagarė, which is famous for “Žagarė” cherry liqueur. This year, the title of the festival was “Hi, brother”, as for the first time the event was a joint fest of Lithuanians and Latvians.Famous Lithuanian and Latvian pop stars and crews performed during the festival, including Laima Vaikule and Riga circus. The cherry fair was also held.
2011-07-15 YOUNGSTER FROM DAUGAVPILS BECAME CHAMPION OF LITHUANIA
On 13th and 14th of July traditional competitions on track and field athletics were held in Marijampole (Lithuania). This year 300 athletes represented five countries – Latvia, Belarus, Lithuania, Poland and Russia.Two disciplines, 5 000 and 10 000 meters, raised special interest this time as the official titles of champions of Lithuania were played out.Young and fast Andrey Domanin from Daugavpils (Latvia) didn’t leave a chance to anybody by running 5000 meters in 15:20,46 minutes, and thus winning the honorable title of champion of Lithuania in track and field athletics. 2011-07-15 LITHUANIA EXPECTS EU FUNDING FOR THE HIGH-SPEED TRAIN VILNIUS-MINSK
On the 15th of July, the deputy president and the commissioner of transport of the European Commission Mr. Siim Kallas visited Lithuania. Using this opportunity, the minister of transport and communications of the Republic of Lithuania, Mr. Eligijus Masiulis discussed the European Union’s financial package to Lithuania for the period of 2014–2020 metams.
Lithuania expects EU’s financing for the fast train Vilnius-Minsk-Vilnius.

2011-07-15 REHABILITATION FOR BELARUSIANS WHO SUFFERED IN METRO BLASTLithuania will accept 15 Belarusian citizens, who have suffered during the April 11th metro blast and pay for their rehabilitation in Druskininkai or Palanga.The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania has submitted a request to the Government asking for 50 000 Litas to be donated from the Reserve Fund for this matter. The Lithuanian Government issued a decision to grant 50.000 Litas from the Reserve fund on the 13th of July.The rehabilitation of 15 Belarusian citizens will take 24 days. Lithuania first offered her help to Belarus in April. This celebration was attended by artists, craftsmen, photographers and writers from 12 countries – Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Poland, USA, Netherlands, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.Among the events of the festival – Art exhibition “Belarusian artists in the world” at the National Art Museum, Photo exhibition about activities of Belarusians in foreign countries at the National History Museum, Literary exhibition “Belarusian Writers Abroad” at the State Museum of Belarusian Literature.The meeting of Advisory Council for Belarusians abroad with participation of representatives of the Ministries of Culture, Foreign Affairs, Education, Information, Sports and Tourism of Belarus was held during the festival discussing cooperation in culture, education, information, tourism projects.Source: GOROD.LV
2011-07-12 BELARUSIAN MINISTRY OF SPORTS SUBMITS PROPOSALS ON VISA FACILITATION
The Ministry of Sports and Tourism of Belarus has submitted to the Council of Ministers proposals on simplifying tourist visa requirements. Once approved by the government the proposals will be submitted to the head of state.In particular, the Ministry of Sports and Tourism suggests reducing visa costs, abolishing express charges and cancelling consular fees altogether in the future.In the beginning of April the Belarusian government has announced the plans on facilitation visa requirements for foreign citizens who enter the country for tourism. Visa facilitation is planned for the countries whose citizens are most frequent to Belarus for tourism.The Ministry of Sport and Tourism forecasts that losses from abolition of consular fees will be offset by the increased purchase of goods and services by foreign tourists in the country as well as by creating new working places, which, in turn, will entail additional tax and budget revenue. Visa regime significantly reduces competitiveness of tourist products and serves an incentive for selection alternative travel destinations.Source: BELTA
Close to “Šķirotava” station (Latvia) the new film “Lonely Island” episodes’ shooting was started. “Lonely Island” is significant co-production of three countries: Estonia, Belarus and Latvia. Film is produced by Latvian “Studija F.O.R.M.A.” in cooperation with Estonian film studio “Lege Artis Film” and Belarusian film studio “Belarusfilm”.
2011-07-01 NEW FILM SHOOTING STARTED IN COOPERATION WITH BELARUSFILM IN LATVIA
Film director is Estonian Peeter Simm, who has twice received the National Film Award in Latvia “The Great Kristaps” for works “Good Hands” and “Three Stories about...”.
“Lonely Island” is co-financed by Latvian National Film Centre, Estonian Film Foundation, Estonian Cultural Fund, Film department of Ministry of Culture of Belarus and Media programme of European Union.
The film is expected on screens in spring 2012.
