On February 13th, 2014 on Daugava river in Daugavpils (Latvia) during the international practical training of the State Fire and Rescue Service of Latvia and their colleagues from Lithuania and Belarus the simulated oil spills into the river according to the scenario from the oil refinery in Polotsk, Belarus was successfully suspended.
During practical exercise about 60 rescuers representing 3 countries made the wide band in Daugava river ice from one coast to the other and immersed special oil collecting bons into the river. Using these bons, special oil collector and pumps, the collected oil was pumped into special containers, and then collected and transported for disposal. In order to monitor the training process from under the ice and evaluate the effectiveness of oil spills collection the number of specially equipped rescuers dived into the river though the created water hole.
Special equipment for liquidation of oil spills and chemical pollution was purchased and the joint exercise was held in the frame of EU funded Latvia-Lithuania-Belarus Cross border cooperation programme project LLB-1-057 “Setting up of joint response system to chemical and oil spills into river West Dvina (Daugava) in winter time".
