Strengthening Security and Facilitating Cross-border Cohesion through Improvement of Entry/Exit Infrastructure at Lithuanian-Belarusian Border Crossing Points
Short title: LT-BY entry/exit improvement
PRIORITY 2: ADDRESSING COMMON CHALLENGES
Measure 2.3.: Improvement of infrastructure and equipment related to the border crossing points
Beneficiary: State Border Guard Service at the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania (Vilnius, Lithuania)
Partner: State Border Committee of the Republic of Belarus (Minsk, Belarus)
PROBLEM: After introduction of local border traffic between Lithuania and Belarus the level of illegal immigration may increase. Most of illegal immigration takes place by forgered or counterfeit travel documents and overstay. The Lithuanian and Belarusian border crossing points lacked relevant equipment to check the authenticity of electronically stored information, limitations of duration of stay and number of entries.
OBJECTIVES: The project aimed at strengthening security in the border-control points on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border through improvement of relevant facilities meeting the EU border management standards and ensuring more effective and reliable check and identification of travellers.
A higher level of security at land border crossing points was ensured by installing the new mobile and stationary equipment and software in the 12 Lithuanian border crossing points on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border and premises of the State Border Guard Service, which enables checking the authenticity of electronic travel documents and identifying the travellers by their biometric data.
The State Border Guard Service at the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania also developed the entry/exit system and infrastructure for border-crossing points in order to control the number of entries and duration of stay of the travellers. It is estimated that at least 1,4 million travellers per year will be checked using new infrastructure.
The project partners developed the Strategy on the synchronization and streamlining of the services on the Lithuanian-Belarussian border.
