PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Measure 1.5: Strenghtening of social-cultural networking and community development
Beneficiary: Ukmergė Centre of Culture (Lithuania)
Partner: Ukmergė District Municipality Administration (Lithuania), Svisloch District Executive Committee (Belarus)
PROBLEM: The territory of Svisloch used to belong to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania once. The duke Vincentas Tiškevičius reconstructed the town of Svisloch and founded the central market square where the famous fairs took place. Ukmergė was also considered to be the center of logistics and one of four most outstanding Lithuanian fairs of those times took place in it. This had encouraged the cross-cultural Ukmergė and Svisloch urban dialogue with the aim of revitalising old traditions, exchanging experience in the cultural field, and paving the ways for new intercultural communication.
OBJECTIVES: Strengthening of durable social-cultural networking between the communities of the towns Ukmergė and Svisloch, by restoring the historic fairs in Ukmergė and Svisloch.
2 international conferences were organised exploring similar features in Lithuanian and Belarusian folk, crafts and the tradition of fairs.
2 spectacular historic fairs were organised in Ukmerge and Svisloch with participation of the foreign guests.
Wooden horse carriages, wheelbarrows, trade pavilions, XIXth century town-folk clothes and other historic items were purchased by project partners, which will further be used for various historic events in the towns of Ukmergė and Svisloch.
