Common history and culture of two countries
Short title: Common history and culture of two countries
PRIORITY 1: PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Measure 1.4: Preservation and promotion of cultural and historical heritage, promotion of cross border tourism
Beneficiary: Vilnius District Municipality Administration (Vilnius, Lithuania)
Partner: Oshmiany District Executive Committee (Oshmiany, Belarus)
PROBLEM: Significant objects of the cultural heritage recalling common cultural and historical past of the two countries located in the cross border region of Lithuania and Belarus are neglected and practically no longer used for tourism purposes. The exposition installed in the Bareikiškės museum is of poor quality, old-fashioned and no longer attractive to the young generation. Valuable Syrokomla's books published before 1900 are extremely damaged and need restoration. The merits of the prominent figures of the region will soon be forgotten. Due to the deficiency in promotion, worth visiting tourism objects get little attention from the public. There is completely no common cross-border region literature material, e. g. no tourist guides, no biographies of the historical figures, no cultural heritage reference books.
OBJECTIVES: to create and stimulate the development of the tourist public infrastructure, thus establishing conditions for creation of private sector initiative in the borderline region. To promote and advertise available tourism objects and products in the cross-border region.
The project linked Vilnius and Oshmiany districts into one tourism route in order to preserve the cutural and historical heritage and popularise tourism in the border regions. Virtual tourism route and map “The Historical Route of the Oshmiany Highland“ were produced presenting the manors, churches, parks and monuments of Vilnius and Oshmiany districts such as Nemezis, Medininkai, Holshany, Oshmiany, recalling the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (tic.vrsa.lt).
A modernised exposition and new equipment were established in Bareikiskes V. Syrokomla Museum and in the Ethnographic Museum of Oshmiany, aimed at presenting the prominent cultural figures of two countries.
A number of cultural events, concerts, exhibitions were organised, such as “Spring of Poetry” and a festival “The Ghost of the Holshany Castle”. With the help of the project the quality of the cultural events has grown and attracted more youth to cultural activities.
The interactive version of the map was also made public on-line: LINK.
