2007-2013 CROSS BORDER COOPERATION PROGRAMME

LATVIA-LITHUANIA-BELARUS
Promotion of neighbourhood cooperation and cultural diversity between creative communities of Druskininkai and Grodno

WINNER OF THE "BEST CULTURAL PROJECT" NOMINATION OF THE PROGRAMME

PRIORITY 1: PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Measure 1.5: Strengthening of social-cultural networking and community development

Beneficiary: Druskininkai Centre of Culture (Druskininkai, Lithuania)
Partners: Druskininkai Mikalojus Konstantinas Сiurlionis Art School (Druskininkai, Lithuania), Department of Ideological Work, Culture and Youth Affairs of Grodno City Executive Committee (Grodno, Belarus), Druskininkai Town Museum (Druskininkai, Lithuania)a)

PROBLEM: The distance between Druskininkai and Grodno is only 50 km. Despite close cross-border social and economic activities,  Lithuania and Belarus face a number of political and economic obstacles which impede mutual cooperation in the field of culture: visa regime, low financing assigned to informal education institutions, cultural organisations and art groups, lack of political will for development of cooperation networks.

OBJECTIVE: The project was aimed at promoting the initiatives of Druskininkai and Grodno regional communities in developing long-lasting cultural relations between individuals and institutions of Lithuania and Belarus, establishing various sustainable cooperation networks and organising joint events.

RESULTS&OUTPUTS: The partners encouraged the involvement of community members in transborder cultural activities. The Belarusian Days of Culture were organised in Druskininkai, attracting over 200 performers from Grodno. The woodsmen plain air collected together Lithuanian and Belarusian artists. 9 sculptures created during the plain air were erected in the squares of Latezeris and Vieciunai settlements of Druskininkai Municipality.

The crafts atelier was set up and partially equipped in Viečiūnai, where education programmes, exhibitions and festivals will be held. The video art studio opened at Druskininkai Centre of Culture, where the lessons of photography, video art, multimedia and audio-video production are held. The Druskininkai Mikalojus Konstantinas Сiurlionis School of Arts has equipped its animation, music making and computer graphics classes. This enabled the school to launch modern art lessons. Over 100 children attended these classes in 2012. The artistic children from Druskininkai and Grodno took part in a creative summer school in Druskininkai.

Druskininkai City Museum cooperated with the National History Archive in Grodno in collecting the information about the establishment of the Druskininkai SPA resort. An exhibition of graphic art of the Belarusian virtuoso Yuriy Yakovenko was open to the inhabitants and guests of Druskininkai in the premises of the Druskininkai Municipal Library. The cultural institutions of Grodno also bought modern equipment and instruments. Over 2000 spectators came to the concert of Druskininkai artists in Grodno. The bilateral woodsmen plain air was also held in Grodno.
