PROBLEM: Breast cancer, the most common female oncology disease, is the primary cause of premature death for middle aged women. In the project countries the death rates among identified patients are measured around 31%. Though the average diagnosis rates are similar to those in EU countries, the death rates in the project countries remain much higher.

OBJECTIVES: The long term objective of the project is to considerably reduce breast cancer death toll and increase the use of preventive measures by improving breast cancer early diagnostics and treatment system and increase of awareness on breast cancer treatment and prevention among professionals and population in border areas of Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia.



 RESULTS&OUTPUTS:

The project partners aimed at widely informing the women of the Latvian, Lithuanian and Belarusian border regions about the risk of the breast cancer and preventing the desease at the earliest stages.

A mobile mammograph was purchased by Daugavpils Regional Hospital, which is used during visits to the towns and villages of Latgale region. Two modern mammograph also started operating at Grodno Regional Clinical Hospital. Lazdijai Hospital has also bought modern medical equipment.

Over 125 000 of women have been surveyed and investigated in the three countries. Over 650 risky cases were detected at an early stage by the partners.
