Short title: Cross-border Nature
| ||WINNER OF THE "BEST MANAGEMENT" NOMINATION OF THE PROGRAMME |
PRIORITY 2: ADDRESSING COMMON CHALLENGES
Measure 2.1.: Protection and sustainable development of environmental and natural resources
Beneficiary: Nature Conservation Agency (Rezekne, Latvia)
Partners: State Scientific and Production Amalgamation “The Scientific and Practical Center for Bioresources” (Minsk, Belarus), State Environmental Institution “National park “Braslav Lakes” (Braslav, Belarus), Daugavpils County Council (Daugavpils, Latvia)
Associates: Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of the Republic of Latvia (Riga, Latvia), Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus (Minsk, Belarus)
PROBLEM: Based on common origin, sharing common habitats, flora and fauna populations, two important protected nature territories (PNT) lay on both sides of Latvian-Belarusian border – “Augsdaugava” and “Braslav Lakes”. Due to different management approach and nature conservation goals set by national governments and international agreements, balance between overall economic development, conservation and sustainable use of unique natural resources of the border region cannot be obtained. Implementation of this CBC project is foreseen as the most effective way in order to provide targeted, coordinated management and development of cross-border PNT. New PNT “Augsdaugava-Braslav Lakes” will be recognized as a single nature object on either side of the border.
OBJECTIVES: The goal of the project is to contribute to the management efficiency of the cross-border PNT and to improve the recognition of PNT “Augsdaugava-Braslav Lakes” by fostering cross-border cooperation and implementing jointly coordinated actions.
As a result of the project a common harmonised nature management concept of cross-border protected nature territory was created. 2 nature management plans for protected nature territories in Latvia and Belarus and harmonised management plan for joint protected nature territory “Augsdaugava-Braslav Lakes” were elaborated.
The common public administrative structure was established for further management and information exchange between Latvia and Belarus. Partners renovated and equipped information centres in protected nature territories on both sides of the border.
Public awareness about the protected nature territory “Augsdaugava-Braslav Lakes” and its nature values was increased with the help of various promotion materials including a virtual tour in 3 languages on the website cb-nature.daba.gov.lv, as well as booklets and outdoor information signs.
