Measure 2.2.: Enhancement of education, health and social sphere development
Beneficiary: Belarusian National Technical University (Minsk, Belarus)
Partners: National Cancer Institute (Vilnius, Lithuania), N.N. Alexandrov National Cancer Centre of Belarus (Lesnoy, Minsk District, Belarus), Vitebsk State Medical University (Vitebsk, Belarus), Vilnius University (Vilnius, Lithuania)
PROBLEM: Cancer is still threatening a large part of the Lithuanian and Belarusian population nowadays. E.g. every year more than 3000 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed in Lithuania and Belarus. The incidence of skin cancer has increased also increased dramatically over the last 30-40 years. The project will strengthen the cross-border bilateral cooperation of the leading national healthcare (oncology) institutions), which will provide for an effective intelligent ICT based innovative tool allowing determining timely diagnosis and facilitating more accurate treatment decisions based on more case scenarios. In order to assure better and more accurate diagnostic results, large data base of cancer cases is essential. The project will work in order to join together the Belarusian and Lithuanian databases.
OBJECTIVES: The project aims at strengthening the health care in Belarus and Lithuania and promoting the cross-cultural communication of the leading scientific and healthcare institutions of Lithuania and Belarus. This will be achieved through professional networking and better empowerment of oncology professionals.
In the project, the partners have developed a cross-border IT-based system for automatic diagnostics of skin and lungs cancer cases.
Using modern tools, the general practitioners take images of suspected cancer cases. The cross-border IT-based system compares the taken images with the clinical examples in the database and facilitates diagnostics. The expert community of partners analyzes problematic cases and provides on-line consultations to improve diagnostics.
In order to develop and operate the IT-based system of automatic diagnostics, the partners have purchased modern cancer diagnostic equipment, as well as IT hardware and software.
